Slade

It’s been a solid twelve hours since the attack, and my ship is finally setting itself right again.

We can’t move, but life support systems won’t fail. Engines are running and we have fuel. We will need to dock somewhere soon. In the meantime, I’ve got guys ripping things out of the few life pods we have. Doom isn’t big enough to have shuttles like the Killswitch, but even we have a couple of little lifeboats.

I’ve actually allowed guys to see Jaws in the med bay now. Since my little run through motivating everyone, there has been no more ass dragging.

I guess I’ll go see my pet.

The idea puts a stupid smile on my face. I’ll have to get her a pretty leash. Once I walk around with her collared, everyone will know she’s mine. I’ve heard of some aliens that bite to change their mates’ chemical signature. I don’t know about that, but Reapers do like to take a chunk of anything they’re fucking. It just… Joins us together more completely.

I go through the kitchen and Spike, my cook, is chopping vegetables with a huge knife. He used to be a berserker, back in the day. Now he’s ancient but his deft skills with a blade are put to good use here.

“Need any help, boss?”

“No man, I’m okay… Actually, do we have any of those chocolates left? You know, the ones from that ridiculous cold planet where they spend their whole lives rendering cacao?”

“Actually, we do boss. Most Reapers don’t like them, they prefer candies or fruit for sweets. Top shelf over there.”

I hurry over and grab the foil boxes. I like these things but eating too many of them at once could make anything sick. I hope my pet likes chocolate and she’ll favor them.

I collect some of our finest foodstuffs. Freshly baked bread, slices of slowly cooked flesh—three different kinds—some fruit and some pastry. I take some wine, some mixed juice and some of the good, non recycled water.

I’m practically singing as I head towards my suite. Reapers who pass me by just put their heads down and don’t say a word.

Whatever the fuck they think of me, really doesn’t matter. So long as they fear me. This shit with Goran has gone too far. I’m going to have to kill the son of a bitch just to maintain my position.

I try not to think about that as I open my door. It’s gene coded, some fancy tech we ripped out of a ship from one of the human sectors. Only I can open the door.

The metal swishes out of the way and I’m totally not prepared for what I see.

My pet is sitting on my bed. When she sees me, she swings those long, creamy white legs to the edge of the bed and gently touches her feet to the floor. She looks up at me and blinks, her silvery pale lashes flicking over her pale blue eyes.

She’s all clean. She’s wearing one of my shirts. It
